The purpose of a first order is to lower the cost of finding out you picked the wrong supplier. That means it should be small enough to be low-risk but complete enough to test every step: quotation, sampling, production, packaging, documents and freight. A trial order that only tests one SKU tells you almost nothing about how the supplier handles a real programme.
Minimum order quantities are usually quoted per colour or per finish, not per order. Our standard is 100 pieces with mixed colours allowed — one order can test three finishes. Fully custom designs start at 500 pieces because tooling has to be made. Trial orders on stock items can sometimes go down to 50 pieces.
The single most useful question to any supplier: "Is your MOQ per colour or per order?" If it is per colour, a three-finish test just tripled in size.
Grade the supplier on the boring things: Did the sample match the bulk? Did the proforma invoice match the quotation? Were the mill certificates in the box? Was the packing list accurate? Did production finish inside the promised window from order confirmation — ours is within 20 days — and did anyone tell you before the schedule moved? Suppliers fail in the details long before they fail in the steel.
A clean trial converts naturally: same items, larger quantity, added SKUs, custom packaging. Keep the payment structure graduated — we start new buyers at PayPal in full under USD 5,000, move to T/T 30% deposit as trust builds, and reserve L/C for programmes above USD 50,000. Escalating terms with evidence is healthier for both sides than a big leap of faith in either direction.
For stock designs, 100 pieces with mixed colours across two to four SKUs is a realistic first order — large enough to test packaging and documents, small enough to be a cheap lesson if something goes wrong.
Yes, and you should: mixing product families in one shipment tests the supplier's range and cuts freight per unit at the same time.
Keep the approved golden sample, put the grade and finish in writing, and require the mill certificate with each shipment. Consistency is a paperwork discipline before it is a production one.
