How to choose a cutlery set supplier without getting burned

The suppliers that answer these eight questions clearly are usually the ones that deliver. The ones that dodge them rarely do. · By the Chufei sourcing team · Updated 2026-10-17

Start with what you are actually selling

Before asking for prices, pin down four things: the market you sell into, the retail price point, how the set will be packed, and whether the customer's logo goes on the product, the box, or both. A 24-piece set for a supermarket promotion and a 72-piece set in a wooden case for department stores have almost nothing in common on the production side — and suppliers price them accordingly.

MOQ: what the numbers really mean

Minimum order quantities are usually quoted per colour or per finish, not per order. At Chufei our standard MOQ is 100 pieces with mixed colours allowed, which lets a first-time buyer test three finishes in one order. Fully custom designs — a new handle shape, a bespoke case — start at 500 pieces because of tooling. Trial orders can sometimes be negotiated down to 50 pieces when the item is in stock.

If a supplier quotes an MOQ without saying whether colours can be mixed, ask. That single detail often changes your first order by a factor of three.

Sampling: how fast, and what it costs

  • Stock items: samples ship the same day you confirm.
  • Custom logo or custom packaging: about 5 working days after artwork approval.
  • New tooling: longer, and the tooling is normally charged separately.

Always approve a physical sample before paying a deposit. Photographs of a sample are not a sample.

Lead time: break it into pieces

"20 days" means nothing until you know when the clock starts. Our bulk lead time is within 20 days of order confirmation — that is after sample approval and deposit, not after the first email. Ask your supplier exactly which event starts their clock, and get it in writing.

Certification: ask for the report, not the logo

FDA and LFGB are the two food-contact standards you will be asked about most. The difference is not paperwork, it is what each one tests — see our FDA vs LFGB guide. Ask for the actual test report with a date and a lab name; a certificate image on a website proves nothing about the batch you are buying.

Payment terms that tell you something

Terms are a risk signal. Our structure: PayPal in full under USD 5,000, T/T with 30% deposit between USD 5,000 and 50,000, and L/C above USD 50,000. A supplier demanding 100% upfront on a large first order is telling you they do not expect a second one.

Eight questions worth asking any supplier

  • Which steel grade, per component — and will the mill certificate ship with the goods?
  • Is the MOQ per colour or per order?
  • What event starts the lead-time clock?
  • Which certification covers this exact product, and can I see the test report?
  • What is included in the quoted price — product only, or retail packaging?
  • What happens if inspection fails: rework, replacement, or refund?
  • Can you handle the artwork for the gift box, or do I supply print-ready files?
  • Who is my contact after I pay — a salesperson or the production scheduler?

Common questions

What is a realistic first order size?

For stock designs, 100 pieces with mixed colours is a normal first order — enough to test three finishes without over-committing. Fully custom shapes usually start at 500 pieces because new tooling has to be made.

How long does sampling take?

Stock samples ship the same day. Custom logo or custom packaging samples take about five working days after you approve the artwork. New tooling takes longer and is quoted case by case.

Can I get a catalog before ordering?

Yes — send an inquiry and we will send the current catalog PDF with specifications and packing details. We do not publish dimensions online because they vary by batch and finish; the PDF is always the current version.
