What North American buyers actually require

The US and Canadian market is straightforward once you know which four folders of paperwork to have ready. Most suppliers stumble on the packaging. · By the Chufei sourcing team · Updated 2026-09-24

The FDA baseline

For food-contact kitchenware sold in the United States, FDA compliance is the entry ticket: the materials that touch food must be composed of permitted substances. Buyers will ask for documentation, and increasingly they want it to cover the finished item rather than a generic material datasheet. We supply FDA documentation for our food-contact ranges, and for buyers selling into both markets we recommend pairing it with LFGB — the FDA vs LFGB guide explains how the two differ.

Retail packaging is the real hurdle

The most common reason a promising US programme stalls is not price or quality — it is packaging. North American retail typically expects:

  • UPC barcodes printed on the package, in the correct size and quiet-zone spec.
  • Claim accuracy. Dishwasher-safe, rust-resistant, BPA-free — every claim needs a test or a spec behind it.
  • Case packing. Inner cartons configured to the retailer's distribution centre, not to ours.
  • Planogram thinking. Sets designed to sit, hang and stack in a defined shelf footprint.

We handle custom printed sleeves and boxes with a five-working-day sample after artwork approval, which is usually the fastest path through this stage.

Compliance paperwork to have ready

Beyond food-contact reports, US buyers increasingly ask for California Proposition 65 statements on applicable items, a material declaration per component, and — for anything marketed to children — additional testing entirely. None of this is difficult for a factory that has exported to North America before, and we keep these documents on file per product line. The right question to ask any supplier is not "do you have FDA?" but "show me the report for this item, dated within two years."

Replenishment and payment expectations

North American retail rewards suppliers who can replenish. Our bulk lead time is within 20 days of order confirmation, which supports a first trial order followed by repeat programs without months of dead shelf time. Payment terms matter in vendor onboarding: we accept PayPal in full under USD 5,000, T/T with 30% deposit for orders to USD 50,000, and L/C above that — a structure that lets a first-time buyer start small without a bank guarantee.

Common questions

What documents should I request before the first order?

At minimum: a dated food-contact test report for the finished item (FDA for the US, LFGB if you also sell in Europe), a material declaration, and packaging proofs showing the actual print. Reports older than two years should be refreshed.

Can you produce private label sets for US retail?

Yes — custom logo on product, packaging or both, starting at 500 pieces for fully custom sets. Stock designs with a printed sleeve can go as low as 100 pieces with mixed colours.

How fast can a trial order ship?

Stock samples ship the same day. After order confirmation, bulk production completes within 20 days, and we can quote sea and air freight side by side so you can compare landed cost.
